The idea of colour blocking is to use solid blocks of colour as opposed to stripes, textures or patterns, hence the name.

The creative eye behind designer lighting company Ango is London-born designer Angus Hutcheson. When he moved to Thailand in 2003, after he’d decided to shift his focus from architecture to lighting design, he created his first pieces and showcased them in local shops. He soon found it was almost impossible to find any established companies that could carry out fabrication for Ango. This led him to create and train his own team of skilled craftspeople to produce the pieces. From then on, Ango developed a distinct style of modern appeal juxtaposed with natural materials, organic forms and a masterful use of silk cocoons.

We all love a good mirror, and one that is ideally placed in our bedroom, bathroom or hallway to take a quick glance at our day’s outfit, make up and hair. You may be like us and even use window reflections to check these vital things. A designer mirror is a decorator’s secret weapon. When used correctly, they are ideal for bouncing light in a room, creating textural and spatial illusions, making darker corners brighter and highlighting specific areas in your home.

Brand Focus: Dare Studio

15th September 2017

As much as we love bringing you the most renowned brands in furniture design, we also relish the opportunity to introduce smaller, independent brands that create unique furniture. Especially when that brand is made in Britain. Based in Brighton, Dare Studio is an award-winning family run company that produces contemporary furniture and lighting for both commercial and residential properties. Founded by Sean Dare in 2009, they’ve worked on collaborations with the likes of Herman Miller and Aston Martin, which speaks to their bold architectural style as much as it does about the care and craftsmanship that goes into every piece.

Style Advice: Eclectic

5th September 2017

This is The Longest Stay’s signature look. It encapsulates a décor that comprises diverse elements – a mixture of textures, time periods, styles, trends and colours. However, there is a fine line between an eclectic room that works harmoniously and one that feels disorganised, chaotic and has no clear theme or motif. And so, we’ve compiled a list of things you can do and those you want to stay clear of to achieve this look.

A common mistake we tend to make when decorating our home is that we often think of lighting as something we need rather than as something that will enhance our home décor. This is why many home decoration stores will have a separate section for designer lighting because it is as important as your furniture when creating a functional and beautiful space. Done right, it can enhance even the smallest or dullest of areas in your living space and by choosing a piece with a bit of character and quirk it can easily become a feature in your home.

Futurism is creeping into our home and the possibilities opened up by our increasingly interconnected world are most starkly demonstrated by the rise of smart devices and home hubs. We can now control our lighting, set kettles to boil, and monitor home security systems from anywhere using our smartphones. Until now, these innovations have only had a minimal impact on how our furniture is designed and marketed, but this too looks set to change. Now that an increasing number of smartphones support wireless charging technology, there is now furniture available, such as bedside lamps and drawers, with a wireless charging pad built in. Malleable electronics that can be woven into fabrics are also available and as screens themselves become flexible, there are various designs for futuristic furniture, some in the conceptual stage, some as prototypes, and others still finally hitting the consumer market.

There is still plenty of debate surrounding office productivity versus home office productivity. A recent Harvard study suggests that people that work from home get more done per day than their office environment counterparts. There is no denying that at home, you can control how your space is designed and you can really make it feel your own. This, in turn, may inspire you to get things done in a timely manner.

The history of the company dates back to before 1750, when Andrew Planche established the first china works in Derby. Shortly after that he began to collaborate with William Duesbury and together they produced high quality china that has been accessorising homes since. Today, the brand employs 200 craftspeople and manufactures the highest quality English fine bone china in its factory in Derby, England.
