Trend Alert: Hygge And Lagom Interiors

You may have heard of hygge – the Danish concept of living simply, in part, by implementing calm colour schemes in your home, using natural materials and light sources and creating cosy spaces. Hygge was a huge trend in 2016, and it seems lagom, the Swedish concept which roughly translates as ‘not too much, not too little, just right,’ will also be having an impact on interiors this year. This notion has similar values to hygge, but focusses more on a philosophy of moderation, urging us to take control of our lives and live a fruitful and frugal existence. In this blog, we’ll take a look at both of these trends, maybe inspiring you to have a re-think about how you are decorating your home.

Hygge

Hygge encourages involving natural materials such as wood, wool and leather in the home. These materials will not only introduce a rustic feel to your space, but will also bring in some warmth. The Cappellini Hiip Nesting Tables for example are simplistically beautiful in design and yet their natural oak will subtly contrast with the more minimalist tones of a hygge home.  Utilising candles is also important as well as making the most of natural lighting. The Culinary Concepts Pentagon Candle Holder will fit in perfectly with hygge, introducing a warm glow into your room while adhering to the simplicity of the trend. Though it is crucial not to over-embellish your home, hygge allows for small home accessories that will add character, and insists on displaying memories such as photographs!

Cosy nooks or spaces for you to relax in while taking a break from the fast pace of life are also key in creating a hygge home. The concept urges you to create an inviting space with cushions and blankets for you to curl up in, possibly with a book or maybe just with a delicious mug of hot chocolate. Hygge also pleases all lie-in lovers, as it suggests you use throws, quilts and pillows to create a wonderfully comfortable bed, which you should spend more time in. We can’t argue with hygge – breakfast in bed it is!

Hygge is not solely an interior design idea – it is a state of mind, and though it can be found in decluttered and simplistic living spaces, it can just as easily be found in a get together with close family and friends, in comfort food and in nature itself.

Lagom

Lagom precedes hygge and is set to be the new Scandinavian trend that everyone will be following in 2017! Unlike hygge, which encourages a state of mind for certain times of the day, lagom prescribes an approach to life overall. It promotes ideas about sustainable living such as recycling, reducing waste, clean living and saving money. Lagom couldn’t have come at a better time – at the start of the year we often make resolutions of things we will and will not do. Whether you’re taking part in Dry January, attempting to eat healthier, or just trying to focus on leading a more stress-free life, lagom is here to inspire you.

Lagom encourages you to get organised, whether in terms of your finances, your recycling or with decluttering your home. If you implemented hygge in your home last year, then you might already have a head start on this, with your fine furniture standing out in fantastically organised rooms. However, there’s always room for improvement – take a look around your home and think, is this ‘just right?’ In keeping with the lagom philosophy of ‘not too much, not too little, just right,’ the Wewood Scaffold Sofa’s dual function as a seat and as a storage unit will help keep any small accessories you have in order – and what’s more, with this piece, you won’t feel inclined to overfill the shelves!

Though we’ll miss the hearty comfort food inspired by hygge, lagom’s healthy living mentality is necessary for this year. However, we know healthy foods can sometimes take a while to prepare, so our advice is to purchase some containers so you can cook up a batch of your favourite healthy meal and have enough to spare for the next evening. Also, these Established & Sons Storage Containers are perfect for keeping any healthy treats in!

Hopefully you’ll be inspired to make a few changes in your home this year, either continuing hygge or starting afresh with lagom!
