Style Advice: Pairing Contrasting Colours

There are numerous ways that you can modernise your home, several of which we’ve talked about before on The Longest Stay’s blog. One method of adding a contemporary spin to your interior is to introduce contrasting colours. From unusual but beautiful pairings such as natural woods and bold blues to harsh and cold concrete aesthetics matched with warm coloured accents, and more, there is sure to be a contrasting colour pair for you. These unique juxtapositions, which seem to be taking over interiors everywhere, have the ability to instantly update a room, installing a fresh look in the space.

Contrasting colours can be brought into a room in many different ways; for example you might decide to decorate your interiors with a bold paint, such as the vibrant blue shown above, and then juxtapose it with modern furniture. Blue tones work very well with natural wood colours, especially lighter tones of oak or maple. The Il Pezzo Mancante Credenza Sideboard, shown above, has a gorgeous light shade wooden structure which creates a wonderful contrast to the blue of the room. The sideboard’s quirky spinning top like brass feet, which are coated in black nickel, along with its marble top help the product exude a sophisticated yet contemporary look.

Warm colours and concrete pair extremely well together; while bold hues soften cooler colours, cooler shades calm the bold ones, helping to create well balanced interiors and products. For example, designer lighting pieces like the Innermost Portland 19 pendant lamps exude industrial style with their harsh concrete shades featuring sharp lines and angles, yet its centre boasts a vivid red, aqua or white colour, which not only makes for an excellent contrast but also adds character to the lights.

Some of the products in our eclectic collection of furniture and home accessories pair opposing colours in their designs, making it easy for you to adopt this style. If you’re looking for a bold piece to wow in your home, look no further than the fabulous Moroso Antibodi Chaise Longue by Patricia Urquiola– its powerful shades of green and purple clash beautifully in its 3D flower design. This striking chair will make a fantastic statement in any room, but will look especially stunning when surrounded by more subtle or minimalist furniture.

Bright and bold colours aren’t for everyone; in fact, it is sometimes tricky to find bold tones that contrast each other without them looking cheap or tacky. An alternative way to introduce juxtaposing shades into your home is to start off with a white or neutral base; with a quiet and subdued overall aesthetic any product with even a hint of colour will become an opposing accent piece.

As shown above, Boca do Lobo’s Diamond Emerald Sideboard looks spectacular when placed against a white interior; it acts as a fabulous focal point that will be sure to grab attention. Injecting rich and deep shades into a white space will make for a beautiful interior that feels sophisticated yet modern. Designer sideboards are ideal accent pieces in any room, and thanks to our fantastic array, you’re sure to find one that will suit your interior perfectly.
