Design Feature: BD Barcelona

BD Barcelona was established in 1972 in Spain under the name BD Ediciones de Diseño, and since then has greatly contributed to the design world with its eclectic collection of eccentric and unique furniture. With its founders coming from an architectural background, rather than from a business one, they have focused their production on cultivating beauty, often prioritising this above the function of their products.

The company strives to push the boundaries of modern design and break moulds with the ideology of publishing furniture, rather than manufacturing it. Their products undergo an artisanal process instead of going through mass production, making for furniture that exudes individuality and contemporary style. Over the years, BD Barcelona has worked with an array of world famous artists and designers including Alfredo Häberli, Jaime Hayón, Konstantin Grcic, Ross Lovegrove, Antoni Gaudí and Salvador Dalí. The company has been awarded international respect for their choice in collaborations as well as for the level of skill and care that goes into publishing every single one of their products.

It was the dream of its original founders, architects and interior designers, Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluis Clotet, Mireia Riera and Oscar Tusquets, to advance intelligent technology and create unforgettable design. Their collections of furniture show that they have achieved just that. Their products, characterised by superior quality and innovative design, project an exclusive feel perfect for anyone wanting to style a completely unique space.

The brand makes use of warm metals and wood in many of their creations, resulting in products that ooze an elegant yet contemporary style. The surreal Leda Armchair and Leda Low Table, for example, utilise this material in their designs that were inspired by the 1935 painting “Femme à la Tête Rose.” Sculptor Joaquim Camps created these stunning pieces of furniture which were influenced by the limbs of the human form. The chair features a long arm and hand coiling around to create the back and armrest along with heeled feet supporting the structure on delicate legs. The table also features human like attributes, making for an incredibly interesting design.

BD Barcelona appreciates and embraces the unusual, boasting an array of products which flaunt an avant-garde style that you’re unlikely to see in any local furniture stores. The brand has created some incredibly distinctive designs that will act as perfect statement pieces in contemporary homes, such as the Mettsass Dining Table. This gorgeous designer dining table features a striking lacquer finish in red which along with its bold geometric shape, will attract attention in any room. This piece was originally designed in 1972, but despite its age will infuse modernity into any room with its steel material and origami sculpture like aesthetic.

BD Barcelona adore unique and eccentric designs, but also appreciate that this style does not necessarily suit everyone or every home. Though they are perhaps better known for their more abstract products, the brand have created numerous pieces of furniture that exude more minimalist looks. For example, the Poltrona Showtime collection by Jaime Hayón plays with contemporary and traditional elements to create a stunning piece that while remaining interesting, won’t completely overshadow any other items of furniture in your home. Involving plastic, upholstery, lacquered wood and the tradition of fine ceramics in its design, this collection exhibits contemporary style ideal for modern homes.
