Craftsman Michael Thonet opened his own workshop in 1819, where he made exquisite designs by bending wood. Together with his sons he founded the Thonet Company in 1849 and more than 865,000 bentwood chairs per year were produced in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Russia. Michael Thonet died in Vienna in 1871 and his sons then took over the company. During the 1930s, Thonet was committed to the construction and technology of tubular steel furniture and quickly became the largest manufacturer in the world. Thonet is still a family-owned business and is managed today by the 5th generation who work with other talented designers such as Laufer & Keichel. Laufer & Keichel is a creative partnership between Julia Läufer and Marcus Keichel. The pair have been working together since 2003 and their studio is located in the heart of Berlin.

The Thonet S 43 chair by Matt Stam features a tubular steel frame with moulded plywood shells for seat and back, creating an absolute reduction in architecture. Due to the comfortable flexing effect of the frame, upholstery is unnecessary. Its clear, reserved form makes this cantilever chair a symbol of modern design. Available in a variety of colours.
